B. Flawless Targeted Wrinkle Filler, £9.99
Anti-ageing treatments don’t come cheap, do they? Think again, the B. range from Superdrug blows that theory right out of the water. I recently started using the B.Flawless Targeted Wrinkle Filler – more on other products in the range for everyone from late 30s to 40s in months to come – and for the bargain price of £9.99 it is surprisingly effective.
It’s packed with collagen-boosting tetrapeptide-21 to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. You might not recognise the scientific name, but it’s a popular ingredient in other, much more expensive, products that do the same job. Be careful, a little goes a long way: use too much and it’s rather sticky and takes a while to sink in.
With just a tiny amount dabbed along lines I could instantly feel skin tightening and after a few days, no miracle transformations, but, yes, a slight blurring of those pesky lines. Over time skin does appear to be firmer. Leave it for five minutes to get to work before applying moisturiser. In these purse-tightening times, it’s a revelation to find a product that works and doesn’t blow the budget. Don’t wait till pay day – put it in your bathroom cabinet now, you won’t be disappointed. £9.99 from Superdrug.
Clarins Extra-Firming Day Wrinkle Lifting Cream, £48
Maybe I’ve just been in denial about being in my 40s but I’d never heard of this mega moisturiser until recently. It first went on sale in the 1970s and Clarins sell more than two million every year, so there’s no denying its popularity as the go-to product for women of a certain age. It was only when I was looking for a moisturiser recently, after I felt the one I had been using just wasn’t working hard enough, that a friend recommended Extra-Firming Day Wrinkle Lifting Cream.
It has been reformulated and is packed with new organic plant extracts, including green banana and lemon thyme. The new, improved product promises to bring spring and bounce back to the skin by boosting collagen. There’s a special blend for dry skin which is perfect for skin recovering from months of being buffeted by central heating and harsh winter weather.
When I saw the rich texture the first thought I had was that it would break out my fairly sensitive-ish skin in spots. I was pleasantly surprised; using just a little at a time, warmed on my hands before applying, it was easily absorbed. Using it with a serum seemed to overload my skin and that’s when the spots appeared.
On its own, after cleansing and toning, I was impressed with the results. I would certainly say my skin feels lifted, in a natural kind of way, and make-up glides on. I have even had comments about looking well – maybe I should let more people in on my secret, £48 from Clarins counters.

MAC Mineralize Moisture SPF15 Foundation, £26
At this time of year our make-up needs a bit of a spring clean. What happened to that wonderful foundation that saw us through every day of the cold and wet winter months? It just seems a bit too thick and heavy now.
A perfect alternative for brighter-looking skin as the seasons change is this new foundation from MAC. The lightweight texture applies beautifully and the formulation feeds the skin with mineral-rich nourishing hydration all day long. Just what 40-something skin needs to keep it looking fabulous. This is no ordinary foundation.
The creamy blend is ideal for dry skin, packed with shea butter, emollients and conditioning extracts to keep the face soft and supple. The magic is in the combination of powders, creating an effect that blurs imperfections and fine lines for a more even tone. With a spectrum of shades to choose from there’s a colour for everyone. £26 from MAC counters. Call 0870 034 2676 or visit www.maccosmetics.co.uk
