Already popular with celebs, including Madonna, Kelly Osbourne and Gwyneth Paltrow, this new fitness trend has come to Scotland.
There was a champagne launch at the studio based at Scone Airport to celebrate the new classes – with the Dundee Comets Ice Hockey Team trying the technique during a fun demonstration on the night. Plus creator of BarreConcept in the UK Emma Newham was on hand to give tips and advice.
So now local people can try this increasingly popular exercise regime – which incorporates the precision of Pilates with the positions, moves, grace and technique of ballet, set to energising music. It’s a fun class, not a dance class.
Pilates and now BarreConcept instructor Joakim Valsinger, a Swedish national who was brought up in Australia before making his home in Perthshire a decade ago, said: “Barre stretches and sculpts the muscles, while burning fat. It also improves balance, strength, stamina, and flexibility.
“The low impact, total body workout lifts the butt, tones the thighs, flattens the abs and sculpts the arms, while protecting the joints. Small isometric contractions are performed and integrated with an interval training approach that burns fat and improves cardiovascular fitness.
“Add to this the alignment of yoga and the strength from sports conditioning and you will have all of the aspects of a typical Barre workout. The combined elements of the different methods fuse to form a challenging and exciting workout, which stretches and sculpts the muscles, while burning fat.
“The result is a body that is realigned, rebalanced and works harmoniously and efficiently. Stretches are performed after each strength section of the class to ensure the muscles are re-lengthened to create a body that is strong.”
Classes are on Mondays 7.15pm; Wednesdays 9.30am; Thursdays 7.15pm Fridays 9.30am

A bit about BarreConcept?
The origins of barre workouts have their roots in the Lotte Berk Method, a Jewish ballet dancer who fled to London in the 30’s when she was banned from dancing on stage by the Nazis. Lotte became injured and used her dance training to help with her rehabilitation and hence the Lotte Berk Method was born.
Emma Newham, 41, has been in the fitness industry for over 15 years, teaching mind body holistic exercise. Her company specialises in Pilates teacher training and her BarreConcept instructor certification course is the first in the UK to be externally verified and accredited by the Register of Exercise Professionals. Her BarreConcept Workout training manual – a world first, has seen orders flood in from America. These are exciting times for Emma as her first BarreConcept DVD out already.
