Laura Davidson, travel editor, columnist and journalist, is mum to four-year-old Hannah and two-year-old Lucy.
Juggling work with a turbo-charged toddler and an energetic pre-schooler isn’t always easy but she’s still determined to look more yummy mummy than slummy mummy.
Here’s how she’s been getting on this month…
It’s not every day you have your very own team of beauty experts at your beck and call.
But the lovely Christmas fairy spread a little of her sparkly stuff my way recently when the good-looks gurus from hair brands Bumble And Bumble and Ojon visited Glasgow along with a top make-up artist from Smashbox.
And it wasn’t even my birthday.
The team were visiting to reveal the new products they’ll be launching in early 2015 as well as showcasing a few old favourites to brighten up the festive season.
First up – the barnet.
What Ojon Treatment Technician Jennie Roberts doesn’t know about keeping hair in tip top condition could be written on the back of a bus ticket.
She’s the go-to haircare guru of stars including Thandie Newton, Ellie Goulding and Naomie Harris. This woman knows her stuff. She recommended Volume Advance Shampoo, £18.50, and Conditioner, £20.50, www.ojon.co.uk.
If you want the science bit, it’s a bit of a protein injection for limp, lifeless hair and contains Peruvian amaranth, lemongrass extract, soy and wheat protein to hydrate hair and increase volume.
Personally, I just wanted to know if it would work or not and this baby does exactly what it says on the tin. It’s like it woke up my hair and, to pinch the famous phrase from This Is Spinal Tap, turned the volume up to 11. I have lots of hair – the problem is that its texture is really fine, but you’d never have guessed after just one wash with this shampoo and conditioner. My hair was pouffed to within an inch of its life. A new fave.
Next, Mark Coates, National Education Manager for Bumble And Bumble introduced me to the brand’s Blow Dry products, £23, www.bumbleandbumble.co.uk – exactly the time time-saver I was looking for.
Available in three types, there’s Repair for dry, damaged hair, Straight for course or curly hair and, my favourite, All Style for fine, oily-prone hair.
A tiny squoosh of this miracle cream rubbed through before blow drying achieves amazing results with real holding power. And the thing I really liked about All-Style is that it can even go on the roots. Instead of making roots greasy it actually actively soaks up excess oil. Bottom line – you’ll get an extra day before you need to wash your hair again. Perfect for busy mums.
Smashbox National Make-up Coach Janine Bird then stepped in to show me a trick I’ve been dying to learn for ages – proper face contouring.
I’m not her biggest fan, but there’s no doubt Kim Kardashian knows a thing or two about make-up and she’s long been raving about Smashbox’s Step By Step contour kit, £35, www.smashbox.co.uk. The kit includes a special slanted brush and three blendable powders to contour, bronze and highlight.
There’s basic ‘how-to’ chart included with the set, but to get the look perfect you really have to tailor the look to suit your face shape. I just learned that I have a rectangular face rather than, as I’d thought for years, a round one. Who knew? Check out Smashbox’s tutorials for individual face shapes on YouTube to get it just right.
Also from Smashbox, just launched in September, Be Legendary Long-Wear Lip Lacquer, £19, is an exciting new range of high-pigment colours in 20 lip-smacking shades.
Love the glam look of a gloss but hate the stickiness and lack of staying power? Then this is for you. Although it dries to a polished lacquered finish, this lippy won’t fade, bleed or leave you with that horrible dried-out feeling. They’re a pretty clever bunch over at Smashbox.
So I know pretty much everything that’s going to be on my Christmas list. Just need those experts on Speed-dial…
