This month, as well as mostly being surrounded by dirty nappies (seriously – how much crap can two little people produce??) I have become a calorie-counting demon.
With the prospect of a holiday in the sun looming in just a matter of weeks, I’m finally tackling the mum tum.
You might think I’m being hard on myself, having only given birth eight weeks ago but, honestly, I’ve been putting this off for too long. Dear Daughter No1 is nearly two, remember. I still had 10lbs of baby podge to shift from my first muffin-guzzling pregnancy when I found out I was up the duff with No2.
It’s time to be honest with myself – I’ve been eating pretty much what I damned well like for the past two years and I have a wardrobe full of clothes that don’t fit to underline the point.
To spur myself on, I’ve hung a dress on the outside of my wardrobe that I’ve NEVER fitted into. Well, come Christmas, my lovely, you shall be mine. I’m promising myself I’ll be rocking the slinky little number come the party season.
Wish me luck. Chocolate and cake were pretty much the only things getting me through my sleep-deprived fugg, so I’m kind of in mourning at the moment.
On a brighter note, my skin is looking great due to my absolute find of the month for August – Garnier’s Miracle Skin Perfector. It’s one of those new generation BB creams that promises to do just about everything except tackle your weekly shop and change your baby’s backside (if only). Think of it as a super-dooper tinted moisturiser that also packs the punch of a concealer and incorporates an all-important SPF15.
Aside from being a great moisturiser, the thing that really surprised me about this one is the coverage – it’s amazing. The medium shade gives me a nice summery glow, doesn’t feel as cloggy as a foundation, but still evens out my flushed cheeks. Even though I feel like a sleep-deprived zombie most of the time these days, it makes me look a little less like one. That’s got to be a good thing, right?
Best of all is the price – it’s only £9.99 for 50mls. Bargain. Garnier’s UltraLift Day (£9.18 for 50mls) is another fave of mine. It’s a great anti-ageing cream and a really light-feeling moisturiser with a lovely fresh scent. Instantly makes me feel awake in the morning.
With no treats of the confectionery variety to see me through the week, I’ve instead been searching the bathroom cabinet for a pick-me-up and I’m loving the new Spa range of products from Bedeck. There are some gorgeous scents to choose from including calming Geranium, Soothing Orange and Temple Tree Flowers and, my favourite, Refreshing Oriental Citrus. As well as hand washes (£12 for 250mls), hand lotion (£14 for 250mls) and bath foams (£16 for 500mls), there’s a home range too with candles for £18 and a 100ml room scent for £14 so you can really create that spa atmosphere at home. See www.bedeck.com for more.
My last two recommendations for the end of summer come with my well-deserved hols in mind. I’ve been getting my tootsies flip-flop ready with JML’s PediPro Deluxe, a fab home-pedicure gadget. Think of it as a pumice stone on steroids. It’s battery powered and has a high-speed rotating head with micro-fine crystals that smooth off hard skin. Cracked heels be gone! Great value for £19.99 (www.jmldirect.com).
Finally, I’m really excited about packing my new Autograph Face Palette, £15, from Marks & Spencer. With all the baby crap – sorry, accessories – we’ll need to check through the airport this time, I’m having to seriously go light on the beauty front.
This little baby has everything I need in one compact case – 12 eyeshadows, eight lip colours and two blushers. I might not have room in my case for 50 Shades Of Grey, but I’ll definitely be packing all shades of gorgeous.
