Three kids, two dogs, two rabbits, a couple of chickens, a horse sanctuary, two jobs and my partner’s painting and decorating business had left us depleted.

We were in need of some rest and relaxation – but didn’t want to stray too far from home… our kids are 17 to 10, so the Red House in Coupar Angus was the ideal stop.

Half an hour from home in Perth, so not too far if we were needed home in a hurry but far enough away for us to feel we had some time to just be a couple again…

Dinner was great – mums especially appreciate when someone else is cooking and clearing up – I’m veggie so it’s wonderful to not have to think up ideas about what to cook. Hubby Mick tucked into the lamb and of course there was room for our puds.

Just being able to sit and have a leisurely drink together as parents was lovely – we forget to have together time when there is so much going on at home.

We all have busy lives these days but I can’t recommend taking some time out enough – and ok, you do talk about your kids a lot – but it’s nice just to not have to run around after everyone all the time and our mini-stay at the Perthshire hotel allowed us to relax and recharge.

Highly recommend it to parents everywhere… and the next day we headed to the Red House’s sister restaurant the Dalmore Inn (with the kids this time) which was a crowd pleaser for all of us.

Make sure you don’t eat too much for mains as the desserts were the star of show.

(Other new dishes on the Red House Hotel menu include Salmon Tagliatelle with basil cream sauce, green pea and spring onion risotto, and a Stornoway black pudding and sausage salad starter featuring sausage from the local butcher in Burrelton, served with a poached egg.)
