Donna White is a national newspaper and magazine journalist, blogger, and mum to Brodie, aged eight, and six-year-old Blake.

Her beauty regime used to consist of soap and water, followed by a quick swipe of lip gloss. Since entering her 40s she admits Mother Nature needs just a bit more of a helping hand. You can find her general ramblings over at

Now if the gravel-toned voice of the Walrus of Love doesn’t get you in the mood for Valentine’s Day, nobody can.

My First, My Last, My Everything was our first dance at our wedding, and is the soundtrack to romance in our house.

Not that there’s much of it – let’s be honest – when you’ve got two little ones running around.

We don’t go in for the commercial side of February 14, but hubby and I do like to make the effort to enjoy a date night – whether that be cooking a nice meal at home and watching a DVD, or getting a babysitter and going out.

But how does a sleep-deprived, stressed out mum who feels about as glamorous as a dirty rag in a lingerie drawer get herself in the mood for love?

imgresI make the effort to pamper myself. You’d be surprised at the difference it can make.

Smooth, soft skin is a must and Body Shop Coconut Body Butter (£13 for 200ml, is fabulous for feeling and smelling great. Since having the boys, I have a few pesky patches of dry skin on my elbows and knees, but a few weeks of using this in the shower and they’ve pretty much gone. I love that this product contains Community Fair Trade virgin organic coconut oil too, so it’s beauty with a conscience.

A great smelling shampoo which gives off an aroma of gorgeousness, complements soft, delicious skin. Bumble and bumble creme de coco tropical riche shampoo (£18.50 for 250ml is a firm favourite of mine, leaving my hair with a fabulous sheen and minimising frizz, meaning I almost don’t need the hair straighteners at all.

There’s nothing like a good lip gloss for sexy, kissable lips and Soap & Glory’s Super Colour Sexy Mother Pucker range is great for creating colour and long-lasting shine (£9 for 7ml Pink apricot is my chosen shade, but there’s a range of about six colours to choose from. It moisturises well, and there’s a tingling sensation when you first put it on. It promises a lip-plumping effect – but I’ll admit I don’t find any effect on me at imgresall. Despite this, I still love it.

A bit of sparkle on the skin, to match that sparkle in your eyes, is a great addition to any Valentine’s beauty routine. I can’t recommend Nars Super Orgasm Blush enough (£22.50 It’s a peachy pink shade containing gold shimmer to give a healthy, sexy glow. There are 36 colours in the Nars range, so perhaps you’d prefer Mata Hari, Sex Appeal or Desire. But with names like those, they’re guaranteed to get you in an amorous mood.

imgresOnce you’ve got your perfect outfit on and you’re ready to knock his socks off, a quick spritz of a seductive fragrance means you’re good to go. To make sure the smell doesn’t clash with the coconut body butter, I use Marc Jacobs Daisy Dream (£38.50 for 30ml which contains coconut water as well as other fruity ingredients. It’s fresh and puts a spring in my step. It’s also a great everyday fragrance for going into the Spring/Summer season.

As Oscar Wilde famously said: “To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance”. So get in the mood for romance by showing yourself a bit of love and attention first.

Now if you’ll excuse me…… *puts rose between teeth*
